Can I Wear a Hat to a Wedding?

Wearing a hat to a wedding is definitely something for any guest to consider. If your invitation says "black tie", wearing a hat or fascinator can certainly be appropriate. If you are attending a beach wedding, country club, or church, wearing a hat is also appropriate. If you are attending a wedding overseas, especially in countries such as England (and certain Europe countries), wearing a hat is almost always expected or encouraged. Typically hats are worn to the ceremony and cocktail hour. However, some guests will remove their hats for the reception. Ultimately, you will want to use discretion and look to follow cues from the wedding party and/or other guests.

What Kind of Hat Can I Wear to a Wedding?

There is an unwritten rule that dictates guests are never allowed to outshine their hosts. Most wedding guests tend to choose medium to smaller hats as a more conservative option. Although, there is no written rule that you cannot wear a larger, wide-brim hat – especially if the ceremony will be held outside and you’re looking for coverage to protect your face from the sun. Additionally, the mother of the groom may want to choose a smaller wedding hat than the mother of the bride. However, communication between the two parties is always recommended. If both parties are in agreement with the bride’s wishes, then both mothers can opt for equally grand headpieces.
